Bannertown is a unincorporated community right near Mount Airy. Parnell Rigsby
lived in Bannertown when Opie found his wallet with $50 (Opie's Ill-gotten
Gain). Just another way of Andy saying "Hey" to people back home.
I had a similar story to Stan's. Back when I was in college in Raleigh (21
yrs ago - eek!)heading home to WV for Spring Break, my truck broke down
just outside of Mount Airy. I had one college friend from there and talked to
his mother who suggested Bannertown Exxon to help me. They towed my truck in
and it was also just like Wally's - guys just sitting around visiting &
drinking pop. Back then, I was only a casual fan of TAGS, but still thought
"This is just like Mayberry!" I had called my parents who drove down (3+
hrs) to get me at Aunt Bea's Restaurant on US 52 (now AG Parkway) but I needed
a ride over there. One of the guys called his house and just said "Son, can you
come down here and help?" and that was about it - no explanation, no arguement,
just asked for help. Within a few minutes, he son pulled up in his truck,
loaded my stuff in the back and took me across town. When I returned a few days
later, my truck was fixed and the
bill was only $40. I paid them a few extra dollars and ask them to treat the
"gang" to a bottle of pop for being so nice to me.
Bannertown Exxon still exists, but I believe it is no longer a garage, just gas
and a convenience store.
