With another Father's Day soon upon us, I wonder what kind of card Opie
might send Andy. Perhaps it would contain a letter something like this.

Dear Pa,

I thought I would write and wish you a Happy Father's Day Pa. And I thought
I would just thank you for everything you did for me when I was growing up.
Thank you for teaching me to stand up to bullies by allowing me to fight my
own battles even though you knew I might get hurt. Thank you for teaching
me responsibility by making me pay for windows that I broke. Thank you for
spending time with me when we just sat together on the front porch and in
our little row boat. Thank you for teaching me how to lose and for not being
disappointed in me when I fail or make mistakes. Thank you for making me
earn my allowance so I could learn the value of work. Thank you for not
laughing at me when I fell in love with Karen and Thelma Lou. You treated me
like a grown up and not like a silly little boy. Thank you for reminding me
to say my prayers and for taking me to church and Sunday school. Thank you
for letting me stop at the court house to see you every day on my way home
school. I know there are many more things that I should thank you for, but
it would take too long to write them all down. Pa, most of all I want to
thank you for just always being there for me when I needed you. I didn't
have a Ma like the other kids; so many times you had to be both Ma and Pa
for me. I know it must have been very hard for you and I probably never
said thank you at the time. But I am saying thank you now. Thank you for
being my Pa.

Love,

Opie
