Many towns had a sheriff whose office was in the jail in town. My hometown of Louisa VA was about 600 people when I was growing up, and the town sergeant, the sheriff and deputy all used the jail. The sheriff was elected by the voters and could only be fired through action of the county board of supervisors, but was never done. Even today, that is the way it is. The next town east, Mineral VA, has no town police force as far as I know but rely totally on the sheriff's office for protection, and since a deputy or two live in that town they are well protected! And yes, during the years we did have our Barney's as deputies or town police, but we all got along and no one did anything horribly wrong but a time or two! Had a few Otises as well....won't go there! That is the great thing about a situation comedy....a sit-com....it can be written to fit the situation and have a lot of comedy!! That is what made TAGS so great, they had freedom to write the script as they saw fit, and it was always a gas and always had a lesson. Slowly we are losing the stars of the show, but hopefully the show will go on forever! What a great thing if a crew could be assembled to do an actual show on stage at the playhouse, based on the old show! It would be a long running performance!
