Ken, you raise some interesting points about Barney as a Deputy. My theory is that Andy knew Barney well and what he could eventually become. It just took 15 or 20 years for Barn to become it (I'm not considering the Return to Mayberry movie). In my mind, Barney caught on and became a dependable detective for the Raleigh Police Department. Also Andy did make Barney take the bullets out of his gun in the interest of safety. Otis and Gomer had probably grown up using guns to squirrel hunt and such, so they'd have some firearm knowledge. Just don't put Gomer on a roof and expect him to hang onto a gun.
