While I never carried one of these and neither did my dad, My Grandfather
and other men around his age did carry change purses in the small town where
I grew up. I am in my very late 40's now and my parents waited very late to
have children. So that gives you an idea of the generation I am talking
about. I would say they probably were the last generation of men to carry
change purses. My grandmother gave me one before I was 6 years old. While I
never used it, I still have it. It was only about half to 1/3 of the length
of the one shown on that episode of TAGS. And that smaller size is what I
remember most of the older men having in town where I grew up. They were
used simply for change and not bills. Seeing as TAGS always tried to make
their setting seem a little older than the 60's (for example the candlestick
phones and ringing for an operator) I would guess that they thought the
change purse would fit right into that time period as well.
