Mr. Kessel, you mentioned Wallace Ford as being in Aunt Bee's Romance. My
favorite movie is Harvey with Jimmy Stewart. I believe the taxi driver in
one of the scenes near the end was played by Wallace Ford. ("They got no
faith in me or my buggy.") Anyway, I never would have gotten the
connection. Is it the same Wallace Ford? It's like Mrs. Poultice and Big
Maude. I just can't seem to see the same actor/actress in these two roles.
To me that's a sign of being remarkably talented. If a character actor is
not readily recognized from one role to another, then they must be putting
on the personality of the particular character they are playing. Which, I
guess would mean that they would not be typecast, or whatever the term is.
I'll have to go back and watch Harvey and Aunt Bee's Romance again. It will
be a pleasant chore. This time I will watch Wallace Ford carefully and see
if I can see him in the other role.
I hope I am not incredibly dense to not recognize the actors in other
roles. I am just so taken up with what I'm watching that I don't notice the
details. I was really disappointed when someone on this digest pointed out
that the scenery as seen through the courthouse door was painted. In my
mind, Mayberry was exactly as it was presented to be and it's hard to think
about it being filmed in different settings and sequences. It amazes me
that Andy and Barney can be talking outside the courthouse, then walk in the
door still talking without a missed beat. (I'm assuming that the outside
shots and inside shots were filmed in different places and sequences.) The
continuity amazes me. Anyway, I put the details out of my mind and just
enjoy being in Mayberry. I try not to notice the painted scenes or
cardboard squad car. I'm happy that a lot of you know the intricate details
of putting together a television show and all about the 40 acres and I have
learned a lot. But I just want to enjoy the end product. However, keep the
information and discussions coming. It's all very interesting.
Kind behind the eyes
PS Was calling Andy "boy" an insult? "I just might have a hand in those
petunias yet, boy." It seems he put a little emphasis on the word boy.
