I was Emailing this week with another veteran and decided I would jot
down some thoughts, that may help folks who are new, and haven't posted
to the Digest much. These are not rules, (only Allan makes the rules,
and we all know the two rules) just realities that I've learned from
years of sending in comments. I hope they are helpful. "You regulars
already know this, but you new-comers listen carefully whole Barney
paces back and forth and reads this.
Digest Posting Guidelines according to the Untrained Voice
1) Your Primary purpose of posting should be to inform, entertain,
engage, and stimulate others who may or may not respond to your post.
Some very thoughtful message get no response due to factors such as;
a) Something else catches most of the attention
b) Answer requires some thought or perhaps watching an episode or
checking a book
c) Shelf life of a discussion may just be a day until a new Digest
inadvertently changes subject
d) People Like the post, but have nothing to say in response. Not
everyone is a plunger (dive right in and respond). Please know that
messages with no responses are still read and enjoyed in this quiet
virtual world.
2) Your thought or idea that is new to you, has probably been
brought up before, and some veterans just don't feel like answering
again and again (favorite episode, quote etc.). That's not to say that
repeated topics are not welcome-just that some feel they've already had
their say answering. You might no answers, or you might get 20.
3) Someone might respond to something you posted, but not your
exact question. It's not an intended slight.

4) If you make a mistake, be it trivia, spelling,
whatever...someone will probably kindly point that out.
(you'd think a person that writes for a living would
know how to spell Fife!)
5) You can't wear your emotions on your sleeve. In this medium,
you can't see smiles, or tongue in cheek responses. Don't get your
feelings hurt by what may have been an innocent attempt at humor.
Polite competitive banter is just part of the culture. (I'm not
sensitive-just high-spirited!)
6) For everything that you think you are the expert on, 10 other
fans think the same thing of themselves. Enjoy the camaraderie and the
exchanges. (Let John Masters just line then up and I'll take them on one
at a time)
7) Some people are days behind when they read a Digest and respond,
so they answer things that have already been answered (perhaps repeating
your answer). (Yeah Barney, we heard that at School yesterday-Opie)
8) If you don't get an answer..it's OK to repeat your question.
Again, shelf life of a day is not enough time for some folks. (What we
needs is a daily newspaper, then this kind of thing wouldn't happen
[lost $50})
9) We're all just Digest Mayberrians and every day we get to write
to or read the Digest is a privilege and we should treat it as such.
There will always be things that we don't want to read about that DOES
interest others. Like Aunt Bee's Pickles.."just learn to love 'em".
10) Allan is Sheriff. He wears the badge. He does the work,
(tirelessly) he makes the rules. Every once in a while we get an
interloper who tries to tell him how to run the Digest.
