Here in Macon, GA, proud birthplace of Sam Edwards and home of the "Lots of
Luck to You & Yours" chapter, we have a local campaign ad in the sheriff's race
which not only is misleading, but has at least 3 documented cases of
malfeasance. Besides that, it's factually incorrect as it refers to Barney
Fife, not Andy, as Mayberry's sheriff. If I were the incumbent sheriff, the
target of this negative ad, I'd be honored for the comparison to the
most-popular sheriff of all time. But here's where the problems lie. #1 - they
use the Andy Griffith theme in the background of this ad. Unless they obtained
perrmission and paid the music publisher for the rights to use this, it's a
serious copyright infringement. #2 and #3 - they use the terms "Mayberry" and
"Barney Fife" in the ad, and I believe these are both registered trademarks.
Hopefully the boys in the lab are already working to nip this in the bud. If
not our town, the beloved birthplace of Sam Edwards, will turn into a regular
sin city.
