Sam brought up some great points about the "Return to Mayberry" TV movie.

I've seen some very harsh small town elections in my life but never one in
which a blaring horn from a station wagon called an incumbent "dead wood."? I
do agree, that would've cost Ben Woods a lot of votes, especially in a place
like Mayberry, and hearing your neighbor trash-talked would be a sure fire way
to gather sympathy for him.? Then again Barney could run a pretty rough
campaign himself. ("76 documented cases of malfeasance!")

As to Howard, Gomer and Goober not getting married, I think the writers wanted
to keep the plot as simple as possible by limiting characters, much as I
would've loved to have seen an updated Lou Ann Poovey or Flora.? I would think
we might have met Gomer's and Goober's wives had they followed through with
their discussion of making a second Mayberry movie with a Christmas theme.? (My
understanding is NBC wanted one but Griffith reportedly wanted to concentrate
on "Matlock" at that point.)? I think they did refer to Howard still dating
around, though, didn't they?

And yes, write-in elections are tough, and I have to wonder if the Mayberry
newspaper was a daily or a weekly?? Because that would have a large sway over
Andy's chances to advertise, etc.? On the other hand there was a TV station
that apparently sent crews to Mayberry and presumably covered the area.? So a
sudden write-in candidacy might have been news, or Andy might've advertised on
their TV station.?
