Carol, I'm glad you remembered how I ordered that saw taken away from our grand old tree. And just in the nick of time, too!
Seriously, I'm so thankful for Allan. He always knows just what to do to make sure our little corner of the Internet stays as much like Mayberry as possible. Ken and David, what a wonderful reminder of why we love Mayberry so, and why we love this Digest and those on it. It's so good to be able to come here and get away from the troubles of the real world, even if just for a little while. I've come to love the Mayor Pike character more and more over the years. Tom Kessel has really opened my eyes to the wonderful actors we were blessed to see in Mayberry. Dick Elliot brought to life a fantastically real, multi-faceted character in the Mayor. I guess to me he was just so very human. His need to always be right caused him to change his mind in mid-stream, then claim to have been right all along. How like me sometimes. I believe his insecurity and craving for popularity caused him to want to be in the majority regardless of how he got there. In The Manicurist he was just like the rest of the fellas, talking a good game but too shy to do much more than mumble when directly spoken to by Ellen. How many of us men brag and boast among ourselves but when put to the test all our talk is just that, talk. Even though Dick Elliot's time in Mayberry was relatively short he sure left a lasting impression. Mayor Pike is one of my favorite characters. I'm glad here on the Digest the Mayor can be remembered once in a while. Beyond the political considerations of his holding elective office, I think of Mayor Pike as one of the true citizens of Mayberry. With all his faults and foibles he cared about his town and the people in it. And he brought us some real humor as he gave us each an opportunity to see a little of ourselves in him. Thanks, Mayor!
