I attended an Economic Forum last night and received some beneficial
information and advice about weathering these very difficult and uncertain
economic times we are going through. One doctor on the panel mentioned that
so many of his patients now are fearing foreclosures. I couldn't help but
think that this was even a problem in Mayberry. Andy was forced to serve
papers on his two friends Ben Scoby and Frank Myers. Both Ben Weaver and
the Mayberry Town Council were so quick to evict a person who was struggling
through difficult times. Rather than working together to seek a solution
they decided to just evict two poor desperate people. Our forum last night
concluded with some very timely words from a priest who is the head of the
pastoral care services at the hospital where I volunteer and where the forum
was held. He told us that in difficult times, both economic and personal,
we need to remember our faith. And with that faith we need to use Wisdom,
Prudence, Patience, Solidarity, and above all maintain our sense of Hope. I
believe these are great words that can help each of us get through our own
personal trials. To quote Barney when he was on the witness stand defended
Andy, "When you're a lawman and you're dealing with people it is a whole lot
better if you go not so much by the book, but the heart." That isn't true
just for lawmen, you know - it is true for us ordinary folks too.
