Hi folks,
I was just thinking of the little hometown where I grew up, and the images I
most often conjured up were not so much the "in house" ones, but those of the
street scenes. Both side streets and downtown.
It got me to thinking of Mayberry. I have so many favorite mental pictures of
the Mayberry streets.
I can see Aunt Bee strolling down main street (it's her birthday). She
stops at a shop that sells ladies wear, and dreams of owning the beautiful bed
jacket, on display in the show window.
I see a bus pull into town, and among the passengers getting off is a Lady
Manicurists. Fast forwarding a bit, I see her from behind as she hurries down
the street. "She definitely is not a boy!"
I see Andy and Barney carefully leading a goat out of town. Barney is
playing a bit of soft music on his harmonica. The talk is, that goat just may
be loaded!
I see a car off the side of the road, and a stranger to Mayberry has gotten
out of the car. The car seems to be stalled. As the man walks into town, he
mops his brow, from the heat. The town seems to be deserted. Where is everyone?
Oh, this is Sunday morning, could the residents of this little town all be in
church?
I see a little church. The church doors swing open, and the parishioners,
led by a reverend, all file out. I hear one phrase repeated over and over.
"Good Sabbath, Reverened".
The stranger walks toward the group of friendly looking folk. He feels
certain he will soon get the help he needs.
I see Aunt Bee and little Opie hurrying down the street pulling a coaster
wagon loaded with packages of frozen meat. They are not alone, almost all of
the dogs in town are yapping and snapping at the contents of that little wagon.
Aunt Bee seems a little agitated. (She just needs to "Call The Man!")
I see a bench just outside the local barbershop. Andy, Barney and Floyd
seated there, are just passing the time of day with idle conversation, while
they wave to passersby.
I see Opie walking along with a pretty little girl. Trying to impress her,
he suddenly does a handstand right there on the main street!
I see a squad car parked on the street. Andy and Barney are seated in the
front seat. While they watch the traffic as well as the pedestrians move about,
Barney is filling Andy in on the latest news of the townspeople.
I see two lively, giggly girls rushing toward the courthouse. "They Look
Like Fun Girls!"
I see an old pick-up truck parked next to the town's horse trough. There
are several scruffy looking fellows standing in the back of the truck. A cute
little gal is partially hanging out of the passenger side front window. An
elderly country looking gentleman is using his hat to dip water from the horse
trough, to fill his truck radiator. "She usually takes eleven hatfuls"
I see so many lovely ladies bustling up and down the main street. Aunt
Bee, Clara, Helen, Thelma Lou, Miss Ellie, Charlene......"Nice Dress Nellie",
etc; I even see a little old lady who clanks, and "little old ladies aught
never to clank!"
Don't you just love the streets of Mayberry?
