Many small towns did not have bus stations. My hometown of Louisa VA, about  
30 miles from Charlottesville, had 4 buses daily for the early years....2 went 
 east, 2 went west. Then it cut to 2 a day, one east and one west.  The  
station was at the Ford dealer's and you could buy your ticket at the dealer's  
or 
pay the driver, which most did. A ride to Richmond, 50 miles away, was  
something like 2.75 one way. When the bus came in, you met your party at the 
bus  
and there was no going inside for that. Small towns were great!!
