I've always considered there were 2 casting mistakes made by the producers, I guess that would be on the head of Aaron Ruben.
First is letting Jerry Van Dyke get away. I know Jerry said he made the decision to take My Mother The Car, but Aaron should have done more to try to keep Jerry as the new deputy. Jerry has that down-home, gentle type of humor that would have fit Mayberry. Second is Bernard Lee. He has said he was greatly saddened that he was not asked to join the cast. He, too, would have fit, once he got the hang of driving on the right.
