In the beloved series of books about Betsy, Tacy and Tib, by Maud Hart
Lovelace, the Philomathian and Zetamathian Societies figure prominently in
their high school years. I believe they were formed sort of as
fraternities/sororities to have a friendly competition factor among the
students. This was back at the turn of the century so it was all very
healthy and fun, unlike the cut-throat contests of today.
