I know a lot of Andy fans are also fans of old time radio. Well there is not
bigger fan of old time radio than me. Lately I have been listening a lot to a
show that was on the air from 1941 until 1957 called "The Great Gildersleeve".
This is just a wonderful show. But I got to noticing something while I was
listening. See if any of this sounds familiar to you. The star of the show,
Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve works for the city (he is the water commissioner).
He is a widower, and he is raising a pre-teen boy, his nephew, (he also has a
niece). He has a live in maid who does some fine cooking. He had several lady
friends, but never married any of them during the run of the show. He has
quite a few male friends. He is a member of a fraternal group called "The
Jolly Boys Club". One of his closest male friends is the neighborhood gossip,
the town barber. Now get this, the town barber is named Floyd Munson. Kinda
makes you wonder if there was any borrowing going on. I tell you, the more I
listen to the show, the more I am reminded of Andy.
Orville Hendricks - The butter and egg man. I have quite a few male friends
too. But Martha does not allow me any of those lady friends.
