Margaret, I think the show could have worked on radio, just not in the same way
it was presented on TV. Radio shows had to be written, obviously, with an
audio-only audience in mind. That's why OTR shows depended a lot more on
verbal sparring and word plays -- some even seemed to specialize in puns
("Fibber McGee and Molly" comes to mind). Physical comedy was often used
(think of Fibber opening the hall closet), but the audience had to be given all
the necessary verbal cues or sound effects to create the scene in their own
minds. Barney's pronunciation mistakes (e.g. electronal, kleptermenerac,
compelsion, etc.) would have been great fodder for the radio format, but the
more visual aspects of Barney's character, such as his wonderful facial
expressions, wouldn't have translated to radio. But I definitely think TAGS
would have made a great radio show, if it had been created for that purpose.
After all, many of the early great TV shows ("Burns and Allen," "Ozzie and
Harriet," "Father Knows Best," etc.) started as radio shows and were then
adapted for the screen. Even "I Love Lucy" started out as "My Favorite
Husband" on the radio!
