Actor Andy Griffith has donated 130 hectares of wetland to the Nature
Conservancy in Chesapeake, Virginia. The donated land contains tupelo and bald
cypress trees as well as a significant population of black bears. The Nature
Conservancy controls about 1,300 hectares of land in the area.

That was 320 acres of property near the Great Dismal Swamp. It wouldn't
surprise me that Andy owned that land for many years before donating it and may
have even hunted black bears on his property. It is a great line in the show
and the dialog may have been rewritten by Andy to "tailor" it to North Carolina
and his own experience as well as make it funny.
