I just want to say that just the majority of woman her age in that era, acted as she did. I still see my mother doing it, when they are defending what the feel is an "INNOCENT" cause, there is no stopping them. When it comes to themselves they are different. We saw Aunt Bee stand up for Mr. Frisbey in Aunt Bee's Crusade, we saw her get all huffy puffy with the choir Robes and the elections when she was speaking for all the "innocent" woman in town. At the same time we saw Aunt Bee take such strong stands , we see that she needs Andy's approval to drive, fly and wear a wig. Think about it, it was the norm of the times is all it was. Just like my mom who would go to bat with my dad for any of us kids but if she wanted something for herself , we got a nice meal, mom made sure all us kids behaved and everything was set so Dad would be in a good mode to ask for what ever she wanted.
