I couldn't agree more with Janet's post about Barney's experiences living in the big city. She hit the nail right on the head, and she didn't even have to deal with any spiders. Coming from a very small village, I can attest to how small towns provide a wonderful support group for those in need. Living in a home with an alcoholic father was not an easy thing, yet so many people in our small town of under 500 took me under their wing and helped me through some very difficult years. Even when the church where I attended did not want to bury my father because of his lack of church involvement, people from the community came through and made it possible for my family to have a proper service at "our church". I lived my first five years of life in Chicago and I often wonder what would have become of me during those transitional years if I would have been raised there without a father. Can you picture Goober and Gomer living in a big city without all the caring people of Mayberry who accepted and loved them for who they were despite their many limitations? Or what would have happened to Otis on those Friday nights when he had a snootful if a bit city cop would have found him riding a cow or doing the dipsy doodle? Who would have helped the Scobies or Frank Myers when they were faced with foreclosures? Kudos to you Janet for a wonderful post. But then I am not one bit surprised you did so well. After all - you are an Anderson.
