Since I mentioned Floyd's glasses not having any lenses I got to thinking
about how few people in Mayberry wore glasses. Of course there was Floyd,
John Masters, and I believe Hazel the choir pianist. Mayor Pike's beautiful
daughter Juanita wore them. Then Robie Miller's boy Jerry wore them when he
visited Mayberry, and Mary Grace wore reading glasses, and Professor St.
John wore them when he came to town. I don't think any of those pretty
girls who Jeff Pruitt checked out wore glasses and I don't recall any of the
girls that Barney brought to Andy's house for auditions wore glasses either.
My point is that not too many people in Mayberry had bad eyes. And I don't
think too many people had contacts back them and of course that was much
before the lasik surgery. Now I checked by high school year book from 1963,
The Faconite, ( thank goodness my mother didn't give it to a disease drive)
and out of 83 kids in my class, 25 of us wore glasses. And you know every
single girl I ever dated in high school wore glasses. Now that shouldn't be
too surprising, because any girl with half way decent vision would never
have accepted a date with me. But I think the reason not many wore glasses
on TAGS was because of the ugly glasses that were available back then.
About the only thing available to guys were those big dark black plastic
frames and all the girls in my class wore glasses that looked like wing tips
off a jet fighter, so it is not surprising that they had the characters
without glasses. Now that I have reread this post I have to admit it is one
of the stupidest ones I have ever written but after spending all that time
doing it, I will be darned if I am going to delete it. By the way, I once
found a pair of eyeglasses in a parking lot while searching for money and I
took them home and my mother wore them for over two years. I wrote a story
about that for Reminisce magazine a while back.
