Exactly WHY was Barney not in some episodes? Did Don Knotts' contract
specify that he only be required to do a certain number of episodes per
season? Or maybe was it an opportunity to give other characters more screen
time? Or was he really on vacation with his mother?

A peek at his IMDB listing shows Don also made appearances on "The Steve
Allen Show" and "The Red Skelton Show" during this period, and popped up in
two movies ("Move Over, Darling" and "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World") and
starred in a third ("The Incredible Mr. Limpet"). So it's possibly just
some unforeseen scheduling issues related to those.

BTW I was surprised to find he actually guest starred on "The Joey Bishop
Show" at one point...as Barney Fife!
