Brenda, my circle of friends and I often use Mayberryism's in our daily
conversations. Someone will say something about themselves and end it with,
"my mother was the same way". To which someone always replies, "I remember
that about your mother'. Or as we're ending a phone call we'll add, "say hey
to the wife". We use so many that they have become second nature to us now.
We always talk about making a "mulage" out of something or giving an
"interloper" "the Big Freeze". We use so many that I can't name them all here.
I will close with a story that occured just this last fall. A large group of
us were meeting at my house for a four vehicle caravan to Blacksburg to see our
beloved Va. Tech Hokies (lead by Coach Frank Beamer, who was born in Mt. Airy)
take on the dreaded Virginia Cavaliers. There were going to be six riding in
my SUV and as we were preparing to leave, my fried Tom, who in his teens and
early 20's had been a tire salesman,
mentioned that one of my back tires needed air. When someone else asked how
Tom had noticed this, I said, "When it comes to tires, Tom is a giant. People
come from miles around just to hear him talk about tires." We laughed about
this one for the rest of the day and into the night. Mayberry never leaves us.
Oh, by the way, the Hokies won of course.
