I talked with a feller today who used to live in west L.A., and he had an
interested story to tell.  One Halloween night about 1965 or 1966, his gang of
teenaged boys got into a sort of juvenile "rumble" with a rival gang.  Each
gang had procured a supply of rotten eggs and tomatoes and whatnot, and they
lined up on either side of the street and started pelting each other.  After a
minute or two, a big limousine drove up, and as if by telepathy, all the boys
simultaneously decided the car was a much better target.  After reportedly
being struck by about 100 eggs, the car came to a stop, and the furious
passenger got out and shouted at the boys, chasing most of them away, but not
before grabbing one of the boys by the shirt and "wiping the car with him."
The passenger was Don Knotts.
