In the color years, both the opening and closing themes were in E flat.  The 
opening theme was also shortened considerably, presumably so they could squeeze 
in one more commercial.  As far as an explanation goes ... I don't know.  
Perhaps Mr. Hagen's aim was to make the closing theme sound more relaxed, as if 
everyone's troubles were over.
 
BTW, the title of the show's theme song is The Andy Griffith Theme, NOT The 
Fishing Hole nor The Ole Fishin' Hole nor anything else.  Just "The Andy 
Griffith Theme."
