Often "left unseen" is a good writing choice.  Comparison:  I read the play 
Steel Magnolias long before I saw the movie.  In the play there are passing 
references to the church decorated in Pepto Bismal (sp?) and the red velvet 
armadillo cake bleeding when cut.  Really funny lines IMHO.  Not nearly as 
funny when seen, as they were in the movie.  Again IMHO.

I'm also glad we never "saw" Juanita or the telephone operator.  (Sorry.  I'm 
having a senior moment regarding her name.  Sarah?)  Another comparison:  On 
Happy Days Joanie's best friend (Another senior moment on the name.  Played by 
Phil Silvers' daughter) was a funny character until she actually appeared.  
Again IMHO, of course.
