Aunt Bee, do you remember which episode this is in? If it appears before the mail slot was installed in season 3, then that would make sense. On the other hand, early in season 2 in "Aunt Bee's Brief Encounter," a mailman named George (Doodles Weaver) hand delivered the mail to Andy at the courthouse. Perhaps George was laid up with an illness at that time and the post office didn't have a substitute, so everyone had to go the post office to get their mail. Well, it's just a theory.
