My mother's family always used the word "dasn't". There were nine in her
family and they all used the word frequently. In fact I still hear it on
occasion when we gather in the beautiful UP of Michigan for our annual
family reunion each August. I will have to keep my ears open this year and
see if anyone says it.
Speaking of lost years with Andy and Barney, I have often wondered about
their childhood together. That must have been a real hoot. Do you suppose
when they played Cops and Robbers, as most kids did in those days, that
Barney was Andy's deputy? Or perhaps Barney was one of the bad guys. Or
maybe they played Cowboys and Indians and Barney got to be the sheriff. Or
better yet maybe they even played Robin Hood and Andy was the stupid sheriff
and Barney was the stupid deputy. Wonder if Barney had a "greazy finger"
when it came to his cap pistol and bow and arrows?
Do you suppose Andy had to protect Barney from the Mayberry bullies during
their childhood? I wonder if he encouraged Barney to stand on his own two
skinny little legs like he did with Opie and his two run ins with bullies?
Something tells me that Andy bailed out Barney many times as young in's. He
was so determined that Opie learn to be responsible for his own actions yet
he always "bailed the little fellow out" when it came to Barney's
misadventures. Makes you wonder.
