It got me to thinking what with the "Cash For Clunkers" started by our government, if old Hubcaps were still alive, she would be the richest woman in Mayberry. On the other hand, Gomer could've fixed up Barney's car just enough to keep it running, to get it to the dealership, then Barney could've used the Cash for Clunkers program to get a really really nice deal on a more fuel efficient '63 car. Mayberry was a Blue Oval town so it likely would've been a '63 Ford Fairlane or '63 Falcon, or perhaps a Mercury Comet. But he also could've gotten a Plymouth Valiant, a Studebaker Lark, a Rambler Classic or a Chevy II, but I wouldn't have recommended the Corvair. I'm also thinking maybe a Volkswagen, a Fiat or a Renault Dauphine, all three of which were actually seen in Mayberry at least once. Likewise, Gomer could've swapped his beaten up Ford F-100 for a '63 Ford Ranchero pickup.
