I just had a nice day at our state faire in Indiana. It struck me how many reminders there were of our favorite show.
First, and most obvious would be the two carnival episodes involving the shooting gallery and the controversial dancer with the one man band (Jerry Van Dyke) Then there was a reminders of Wild West Show. Some items were more promotion and hype than substance, There is a fishing pond with lots of opportunities for fishing by kids. It's No Myers lake ..more like a cement pond but a great opportunity for city kids and those no around natural fishing areas. Inside the DNR building, we see some large fish in tanks..reminiscent of Old Sam. There were, of course, flower competitions (like Roses) and all kinds of food items (like pickles).. in pact I think Mayberry missed an opportunity not having a Pumpkin growing completion...very interesting. There were white horses with riders.,,and lots of cows (but with no riders) and many Beau-like roosters that Opie could have chosen from. In particular I saw a boy just older than Opie with his Rooster on his lap like a pet. Lots of Brown-decked Sheriff and Deputy's and even mention of the "Sheriff's Association" (I'm sure they have good insurance). There was a whole building full of Bert Miler's peddling their wares. Oh..and for eats..a Pork chop sandwich. There was Bluegrass music, similar to the Darlings.. and many more reminders I've already forgotten..so if you want to be surrounded by Mayberry, and you can't make it to Mount Airy or the Taylor Home Inn..check out your state fair, and be observant. ----------------------------------- Thinking about the Rose competition...I always through that Mr. Simmons was like an out of town guest..in that he had a Simmons Seed catalog etc. Then, he shows up on the Seth Taylor Statue episode. Did you always know he was local?..or did you think he was from Out of town as well?
