Congrats to the Dillards for their accomplishments. I feel compelled to share a story about them. On July 5, 2008, I attended the Sally Mountain Bluegrass Festival in Queen City, Missouri, Rhonda Vincent's old stomping ground and the festival that's hosted by her parents, Johnny and Carolyn. Rodney and Doug were there for an afternoon question/answer/performance time and an evening performance. They were magnificent! Rodney told the story of them wanting to get to L.A. and left Missouri to make it as far as Oklahoma. Finally they made it to L. A. and they went to the lobby of a hotel to just jam, and a guy approached them and said his name. He was a famous talent scout for a record company, and they had no idea who he was. Then there was an ad in the newspaper for a hillbilly type bluegrass band that was called for in a script for TAGS. They went in to Desilu Studios and auditioned in front of Andy and others. Rodney said they hadn't played but a few measures when Andy stood up, slapped his knees, and exclaimed, "That's it!" Rodney thought Andy had heard enough, so he told the boys to gather their instruments and leave. Andy said, "No, son, you don't understand. You got the job." Later on Andy realized that since the Darling Boys never spoke words, they wouldn't receive residual pay, so he made sure they were given credit for the songs they played. He said Andy was a great guy all along. Then of course, we all knew that.
