I've been reading with interest the theories about how Andy tied up the escapee
(Allan Melvin). But isn't the most likely explanation that Andy did in fact
have a gun? We didn't see it, but it certainly seems likely that he would have
taken his pistol on his camping trip, as protection against wild critters such
as bears or snakes, or in case he wanted to do a little hunting or just target
practice. I imagine he pulled his gun on the escapee, ordered him to stand up
against the tree with has arms wrapped around it, and said, "Don't try any
funny stuff like trying to run away, I'm a good shot with this pistol."
Doesn't that make more sense than any other theory?
