>>>Aunt Bee had to write Aunt Nora to visit remember? Then at the
ends conclusion she uses the phone to call her. Why didn't she call Uncle
Ollie and Aunt Nora by phone before?<<<

My guess would be that it was long distance, and at that time long distance
telephone calls were pretty expensive. (Of course, I don't have to tell you
that, Tom, considering all the long distance calls you made to actors over the
years!) Consequently, most people didn't make them very often. Letter writing
was much more common in the '60's.

However, in the epilogue, it wasn't Bee who initiated the call but Nora. Andy
and Aunt Bee were sitting on the porch when the phone rang and Bee answered it.
The phone call at the end worked so much better in terms of the story. It
gave Bee the opportunity to proffer another invitation for a week-long visit
during the holidays while we see Andy's immediate unfavorable reaction as he is
listening on the porch. So it was used as a plot device and was a great way to
end the show.
