Harry I think I can answer your question.First up: Casey Adams aka Max Showalter who died in 2000 died only 15 miles from where I live in Connecticut. He receieved a decent size obituary in our local paper upon his death. He took back his birthname Max. He was in Leave it to Beaver only in the 1957 pilot and in no other role ever in the series. Now regarding Casey possibly playing Gilbert's father. there were several . the most prominent was character actor Carlton Young a 40s romantic who never achieved the success he wanted. he had the same name as another Carlton Young and that cause a problem for years upon getting roles. He was in Abbott and Costello In Hollywood and Casey Adams biggest role in films, was a lead in the 1956 horror film Indestrucible Man with Lon Chaney. Carlton G. Young died in 1971. He played John Gates in Beaver and Gilbert , father to Gilbert. Gilbert was played by Stephen Talbot who's father was the great character actor Lyle Talbot . Lyle played a riole in Leave it To Beaver. He once told me by phone when he was 89 yrs old, he hated being in the Plan 9 From Outer Space. 1956 with Ed Wood. He chuckled with an obsenity that it was the worst ...... he ever appeared in. its still regarded as worst film ever made but has reached cult status.
