Though I really can't add any information about Dick Elliott (Mayor Pike), I would like to say that he is one of my favorite character actors. The movie roles that stand out most in my mind are his parts as the judge in "Christmas in Connecticut" and the man on the porch in "It's a Wonderful Life," probably because I watch those every year around Christmas. But I have seen him in many, many films. Yes, he often had very small parts, but his short stature, round belly, and distinctive voice made him noticeable. And he always seemed to add just the right touch to any role he played.
He was my favorite Mayberry mayor, and I wish he could have continued longer in that role. Though Mr. Elliott was a prolific actor both in films and TV, the popularity of TAGS seems to have given him the lasting fame that may have eluded him had he not played our beloved "fat little mayor." If anyone else can provide any behind-the-scenes type of information about him, I would sure be interested in reading it.
