My personal opinion is that a lot of the difference we see in Andy is due to the absence of Don Knotts. I think not having Don to play off of took much of the fun out of the series for Andy. Those two were so perfect together, and it's obvious that they enjoyed each other, so I believe it just wasn't quite the same for Andy after Don left.
