Ken, where I live a lot of school buses and town trucks have their own pumps at their own county or municipal garages. (Wondering why there weren't pumps at the Mayberry Courthouse? Now it would be less likely due to environmental and safety concerns but back then it was surprisingly common if a sheriff's office was based there.) Now the farmers are a different story, they had to find gas for their tractors somewhere. Larger farms probably had their own pumps but smaller farmers? Another thing to consider: much of Mayberry was clustered around the town square and the weather in Mayberry seemed to stay mild year round, almost as if it were California. ;-) So a lot of people probably simply walked wherever they needed to go.
