I wasn't going to admit this because it's rather embarrassing, but for several years while I was growing up, I used to think the word "larynx" was actually pronounced "larnyx" because that's the way Barney pronounced it on TAGS (I think maybe it was in "Barney and the Choir"). In my defense, it has to be admitted that "larynx" is not a word that we often hear spoken or see written. Therefore, as a child, I didn't realize that it was a Barneyism and didn't discover the mispronunciation until several years later. I wonder if any other kids out there learned words the wrong way from Barney. This reminds me of another childhood incident. When I was in third grade, I guess we didn't have a spelling book because our teacher always wrote the words for the week on the blackboard, and we students had to copy them down in our notebook to study. (No, it wasn't THAT long ago! But it was a very small school in a very small town.) Anyway, one week one of our spelling words was "arctic." However, the teacher misspelled it on the board as "artic." Later in the week, the teacher realized her mistake and corrected it, but by that time I had already learned it as "artic" and had to relearn it as "arctic," which was very annoying to me. So much so that I've never forgotten it after all these years.
