For anyone who has read a lot of Mayberry trivia, like the book "Mayberry
101", you will know that Opie was named after Opie Cates who had a very popular
band in the 30's and 40's. Opie Cates also had a radio show in 1947 for a
short time. He began every show by saying "The dog gonest thing happened to me
the other day".
