Someone recently sent me a beautiful picture of an owl. It got me thinking about the references to owls in Mayberry. There was the omen of the owl, and the Darlings ruined a perfectly good hoot owl while trying to cook, and we heard an owl when Andy was telling his story about the Man with the Golden Arm, and Gomer could make a hoot owl sound, and of course Otis woke up rather owly in the morning after a night of drinking. And I wouldn't be surprised if that wasn't a White Owl cigar that Mayor Stoner was smoking when Barney took the fire extinguisher to him. Now I realize many of you probably don't give a hoot about owls, but as for myself, once in a while I like to see an owl.
