contestant Barbara Sue Lindsey (many people mishear her last name as
Lincoln), Pearly Mae Dubois (in the yearbook), and Violet Rose Schumacher, who
competes with Aunt Bee for a job at the print shop. In The Case of the Punch
in the Nose, a girl named Betty Ann gets punched. And if pen names count, we
can't forget Helene Alexian Dubois.
And before someone mentions Ellie Walker, her middle name is never given in any
episode. Some folks, and some books, will claim that her full name is Ellie
Mae Walker, but this misunderstanding come from a line Andy speaks in "Cyrano
Andy." He says, "Ellie, may I say, behind that pretty face you've got an awful
handsome brain?" Couple this with the fact that another popular sitcom of the
day featured a character named Ellie Mae and it's easy to see how this mistake
could be made. Even her diploma on display in the drugstore bears the name
Elinor Walker with no middle name.
