Last week I took a short vacation with my wife and daughter, spending two days
in Asheville, North Carolina.  The original plan was to spend Thursday touring
the Biltmore mansion, but my wife had already been there twice and did'nt care
to go again.  I coerced them into making the pilgrimage to Mount Airy, about
2.5 hours northeast.  My college-age daughter was not terribly excited, but
suffered along anyway.

Let me tell you, if you have never been to Mount Airy, you owe it to yourself
to make the trip.  Downtown Mount Airy is just the way I envisioned Mayberry.
We ate lunch at the Snappy Lunch (had to have the porkchop sandwich!) and then
visited Floyd's City Barber Shop next door.  We shopped at a couple of the
Mayberry theme shops on Main Street, and met the folks at Mayberry on Main who
post here occasionally.  We traveled down Main Street to see Wally's Service
Station, and snapped a photo of a replica black-and-white squad car.  We then
stopped by to take a photo outside Andy's boyhood home.  We ended our
pilgrimage by a visit to the Andy Griffith Museum, where we met Emmett Forrest,
Andy's boyhood friend.  Emmett is a true gentleman, taking time to share his
memories of Andy with all who visit.  He even took a photo of us standing
beside the Andy and Opie statue, which I'm glad to say has be restored to it's
original state after its recent
 vandalizing.

If you cannot go for Mayberry Days, you owe it to yourself to make at least a
one-day visit to our hometown.  It was a day I will never forget!
