I think what Andy meant was that he seemed to be gaining Ron Bailey's trust until that moment. Even though Andy's comment was innocent, the Bailey boy's cynical outlook interpreted the remark as a calculated ploy to win him over, so he became even more antagonistic and resentful than before.
