On the newsstands this week, is a copy of TV Guide which feature the top
50 Television families.

Predictably there are some in the group that are far from Mayberry
values, but I think the fact that the Taylors were selected is a tribute
to our favorite show. I believe they were selected #18, which is great
considering it is a family that just consists of a Father a son and an
Aunt. The fact that there is no mother, no daughters..and in fact only
one son, really put the odds against them. For instance, the Top-ranked
family, was The Brady Bunch. Six kids..a total of nine, counting Alice,
lends itself to lots of family chemistry, sibling rivalry stories.
Second place went to The Huxtables (Cosby's) ..another big family who
arguably were bigger in terms of ground-breaking TV being a wealthy
minority family.

The only family of that era ranked ahead of the Taylors, was the
Cleavers. I don't have a problem with that. With June holding her own
against Aunt Bee..and the Wally---Beaver brother interactions...I get
it. If you'd like to the see the whole list, her it is..but please
let's not slam some of the selections. Just celebrate the Taylors being
in the top 20!!!

Ken, I enjoyed your story about flawed Mayberry vs. the Idyllic image.
Casual fans seem to think that there were never any problems. It caused
me to think about some things that, to me, would still rank as idyllic
in today's world.

Most crimes were still pretty minor. A rare case of domestic violence
was the exception rather than the rule. Most crimes were crimes against
property rather that crimes gains the person..misdemeanors vs. violent
felonies.

There was jealousy and grudges..but they were usually dropped pretty
quickly.

Children could truly trust adults/strangers.

There was a great sense of community that you do find some places today,
but not everywhere.

You could let your daughter go on a date, and know that the only heat
might be a cup of hot chocolate.

The demands of work were relatively easy compared to today's stressful
occupations.

Those are my thoughts...others may feel differently.

Longing for a simpler Mayberry time
