Has anyone else ever noticed the similarities between the town in the Movie "Hoosiers" and Mayberry?
You could pick up the local l rumors at the Gas Station. A teacher was a well-respected member of the community that the main character fell in love with. There was a prominent sheriff, a minster, and Local farmers who spent time in the Local barbershop discussing all things local, political, etc.. They, at first, frowned on an outsider, before understanding and accepting him. There was a lovable town drunk. One key element of the dramatic closing scene was the proposed used of a "decoy" I'm probably biased, being an actual Hoosier, but this is a wonderful film that, while being about sports, is all about small town life in the 50's. It was in Indiana, but not much different than North Carolina. We've been watching "Hoosiers" a lot here in Indiana, because one of our local Colleges, Butler, played out that David vs. Goliath storyline..almost to a movie script ending. Take a look at it, if you never have..it's based on a true story. Basketball is the sport, I think that was under-emphasized in Mayberry. Other than a few vague references (a basketball for a gift..and Aunt Bee and Clara playing in Grammar School) Basketball is never mentioned or shown. When I was writing, Fan Fiction..or as I called them, Lost Episodes, that's why I decided to write one about basketball. It was one of the three main things I never saw in our favorite show..but wished I had. For the record, those three things are..The Story of Opie's Mother, A story about basketball, and another Christmas episode..What would you have liked to see more about?
