Well, yes and no. The silly song titles that were mentioned in connection with the Darling clan but never sung on the show were the product of the writers' imaginations. However, Mitch Jayne (the bass player, who is a very talented writer in his own right) later wrote lyrics to go with some of the titles. You can find these lyrics in the book "Everybody on the Truck" by Lee Grant. There can be little doubt, though, that this particular song title was inspired by a real song by Spike Jones, sung in barber shop quartet style, that went like this: Never hit your grandma with a shovel, It makes a bad impression on her mind. In a better way, impart all the love-things in your heart, For it's possible she may retort in kind. Remember, Granny's known you since a baby, And even though in fun, 'twould prove a shock. So respect her aged head, stay the shovel and instead, Paste your dear old sweet old grandma with a rock. I think Tiny Tim may also have recorded this song, much later. One last thing, there was also a silly old song entitled "Never Throw a Lighted Lamp at Mother."
