As most of you know I have a number of compellsions - one being pickles. One
of my most favorite TAGS episodes is of course "The Pickle Story". Since
Barney once said he could always get a job as a brine tester at the pickle
factory I decided to research the growing of cucumbers in North Carolina. Here
is what I learned. The cucumber is believed to be native to India. It was
first brought to North Carolina in the mid 1500's. They were most likely
brought to North America by the Spaniards who then taught Native Americans how
to grow European vegetables. ( chances are the Battle of Mayberry occurred
right at the peak of the cucumber growing season so that is why so few Indians
were in the battle). (It is also too bad Aunt Bee didn't wasn't around at that
time. After the infamous battle, they could have smoked one of her pickles
rather than peace pipes.) Cucumbers are grown all across the state but they do
prefer the well drained soils of the Coastal region of North Carolina. They
grow best in full sun with moderate amounts of rain.

There you have it folks. Everything you ever wanted to know about cucumbers in
North Carolina. Not only is Allan's wonderful Digest a place of fun,
foolishness, and great debates, it is also a place where one can come to
improve one's mind and gain new knowledge. And it doesn't cost a dime, unlike
Barney's Learn a Month Magazine.
