Being on an extended road trip, I meet many new folks who are drawn to my little dog; when they ask her name and I say Thelma Lou, it invariably evokes a smile. The person will usually launch into a lively discussion about Mayberry. I had a particularly enjoyable encounter a few days ago while waiting for Old Faithful to erupt. A family of 5 boys from nearby Idaho, ages 6 to 15, along with their father, all had their favorite episodes and characters and were genuinely tickled to hear that I had met most of those actors. It is so heartwarming to witness the universal appeal of our beloved hometown and I always feel proud to be a Mayberrian! Aunt Bee of Orlando (in Minnesota right now!)
