I thought I would check out one of Neil Bentley's ideas of episodes that
may contain the episode name (good excuse to watch a favorite anyway,
huh)
I watched Bargain Day. When Aunt Bee pours from the big bag of sugar
there was a lot of talk about bargains and prices..but never "Bargain
Day". In the Butcher shop they talk about prices and savings..but not
Bargain Day. So unless I missed it, that one off list, friends.
I have a few other comments about that episode. First, I think a
better, more memorable title would have been something that was spoken
in the dialog. "Call the Man!"
This episode also reminds me of the topic of Competition in small towns.
In my mother's hometown (the Mayberry where I grew up) there are two
business side by side. They are restaurants one that handles pizza (a
Pizza King) and the other sandwiches. Unbeknownst to each other, they
both bought a Fried Chicken franchise from the same company. So right
side by side with the same signs and same red white and blue awning are
two broasted Chicken places called Winner's choice Broasted Chicken, in
this little town. They both invested in the fryers and licensing
fees, so neither one can really back out. It really looks funny, but I
hope they can both survive.
That brings me to the issue of Competition in Mayberry.
Now I'm not talking about the 50 yard dash, or the baseball game, or
delivering groceries to get a job, or any of the hotly contested
elections..but Business Competition.
When were there two similar business competing for Mayberry's small pool
of Loyal customers?
1) Well, I was just talking about Bargain Day..so we know that
Diamond Jim's butcher shop was operating at the same time as Foley's
market.
2) We know that Bert Miller gave Ben Weaver a little competition
until Ben bought him out and gave him a job.
What other Businesses Competed??
Ole may Schlummer was the only one in Real Estate until he took
on Barney.
There was only one Barber (but with two chairs for a while) and
one Beauty shop.
Weaver's didn't seem to have too much competition other than
moonshiners like Lester Scobe.
One Doctor, One Garage/Filling station..I guess there were a few
restaurants competing at times. The Diner and ???
Can you think of other Business Competition (besides Opie's Newspaper of
course)
