In the episode where Aunt Bee worked at the printers-when Warren and
one of the counterfeiters are trying to unlock the bumpers. The
bumpers don't appear to be locked. Was this a common occurrence in
older vehicles that had been in accidents?

Yes, before some idiot in the auto industry decided that bumpers should be painted,
they did occasionally lock. The reason for bumpers was to bump. At low speed they
would absorb the crash. At a higher speed they would sometimes over ride each other
and lock. The way to unlock them was to bounce on the car, up& down to cause
it to unlock which usually worked. Also it was standard practice to use the
bumpers to push a stalled car to get it started. They were usually chromed plated
and would not have any damage to them. Try that with today's painted bumpers.
Unfortunately, I am old enough to remember real bumpers.
